'Tahs annihilate sorry Lions
Friday, March 12
The Waratahs ran in 11 tries to thrash the Lions 73-12 at the Sydney Football Stadium on Friday.
The hosts fired on all cylinders as they outclassed a sorry-looking Lions side who have now lost five in a row. Drew Mitchell scored four tries, Lachie Turner and Josh Holmes both got braces while Wycliff Palu, Dean Mumm and Tom Carter also got in on the act.
Mitchell opened the scoring when he managed to dot down after catching the Lions off guard with a quick tap in the 6th minute. However, the winger undid his good work moments later when he failed to field a kick. Mitchell fumbled the ball into the in goal area and failed to touch down for a 5m scrum which saw Tonderai Chavhanga pounce on the loose ball to score a gift of a try.
That would be the Lions’ only score in the first half as the ‘Tahs took control of the game and secured the four-try bonus point before the interval. The ‘Tahs immediately hit back when Lions flyhalf Carlos Spencer’s grubber kick went straight into the hands of Waratahs lock Dean Mumm who shook off one defender and ran in for the try.
Carter and Turner crossed the whitewash before Mitchell scored a scorcher of a set piece try in which he beat three defenders following a fluent lineout.
Half time: Waratahs 33-5 Lions ‘Tahs No 8 Wycliff Palu gathered a crosskick from Berrick Barnes to score the first points of the second half before Mitchell ran in back-to-back tries. Replacement prop JC Janse van Rensburg powered over from close to the line in the 67th minute for a consolation try for the Lions followed by a quick double for ‘Tahs replacement scrumhalf Holmes and an end to end try for Turner.
SARugby.com Man of the Match: Drew Mitchell. For the Waratahs, Mumm was very impressive in the No 4 jersey and Barnes had his best game yet for his new franchise. Doppies la Grange was outstanding for the Lions while Todd Clever continued his good form. However, the day belonged to Mitchell who looked for work throughout and bagged four tries.

PATHETIC, USELESS, DISGRACEFUL!!!!!!!
Please for the love of South African Rugby BRING IN THE KINGS FOR NEXT YEARS SUPER 15!!!!!!!
The Cheetahs best thing they did was breaking away from this USELESS UNION!!!!!!!!!!!
Now the PATHETIC, USELESS (edited)cats face the Crusaders next week
Expect 100 points
What a joke of a Rugby Union
Anyone see his tackle on Palu? PATHETIC like his team
ROFLMAO @ the idiot who compared the Lions to the Sharks!!!
But Karma, is that really necessary...I guess your just showing your quality...Again
Need to mention the Earl Rose attempted tackle on Wycliff Palu
In regards to bringing back the "Cats" franchise. Why would the Cheetahs weaken their team they are building by adding this pathetic bunch?
OMG I actually thought for a little the Sharks might be the worst team in South Africa this year but obviously I have absolutely NOTHING to worry about
ROFLMAO!
Can't believe it!
Karma - after you calmed down and spilt your juices all over your keyboard ..remember this -> Its still a SA team that got molested.
How can anyone take anything positive from this game? (Dick Muir take note!) The Lions are becoming worse than better every game.
What an insult to SA Rugby! How can players of that 'calibre' sink so low?
It beggars belief! Maties and Ikeys could do better or a team from the Vodacom Cup! In fact Grey College would do better!
That's a compliment to them and an insult to GLRU!
I'm stoked I'm not a Lions fan...what can you support?
SA teams for next years Super 15 Bulls, Stormers, Cheetahs, Sharks and the Southern Spears / Kings.
Karma, you're really childish and what you said was uncalled for but I'd be lying if I said I didn't know where you were coming from. Sounds like sour grapes and looking for someone to pick on (due to the Sharks' current position) coming from you. The Bulls still hold the record for least wins in a season (0) but the Lions look strong contenders to equal that this year!
In the end, we're all neighbours and should be behind each other as South Africans but it's sad that (at times) Provincialism seams to go above National Pride. I guess I'll just make the most of silence of some loudmouth Lions supporters for now though.
Bring back Louis Luyt.
Look, im embarassed by the Lion's performance today (VERY embarassed), and also for their performance in the Super 14 for the last few years. I think today the Lions played pathetically but to be honest as a Lions supporter you get used to being thrashed, and of course mocked and laughed at afterwards...which is something you Stormer's and Shark's supporters haven't really experienced...especially year in and year out. Yes the Sharks have had it bad so far this year considering what they are capable of but thats what happens when a good team has a drop in form.
So firstly to crazysharkman, i respect you man for not lambasting the Lions especially because you know that i am a Lions supporter myself. Secondly RugbyGal i have never said that the Stormers are pathetic, iv said that they are over-rated...big difference. And yes during the week i made a joke about the Sharks being a "dead animal" and not a dangerous "wounded animal".
Karma, i think its pretty weak mocking a team that hasn't won a game yet considering the Sharks haven't won 1 either...you're creating bad Karma for your team. Wait till you guys start winning again before you do the insulting. Im sure a few Sharks supporters will agree with me.
And the Sharks and the Lions!
Bulls lost ALL their games in 2002 and won 5 years later, so all teams have to start somewhere. (and we all know Lions had to start from scratch this year) Regardless of weather that ever happens (or if the Lions aren't in the Super 15 next year) there are still 8 rounds to go and some provincialism to overcome for ALL South African Supporters... Let's leave that for the Currie Cup and out of EVERYTHING else.
And I agree with Swami... Let's leave the schadenfreude for other Nations if at all.
Just give the Franchise to EP, at least they really want it.
You would think that they would at least try to play decent rugby.
Spencer is a has been joke thats just playing in the Super 14 to pick his pension.
Dick Muir just showed what a useless coach he is that he has to bring in a 19 year old to do a mans job.
I don't even know why we have him in the springbok setup
If i was part of the Springbok management i would be worried because perhaps Muir is showing his true potential or lack there of.
i do feel it has something to do with their philosophy about rugby. when stormers offered him a contract the lions go suing fourie. i mean; he was faithful to them for years. now i know this is the professional era, but you have to draw the line. someone at the top has lost tough with the game and its rubbing of on the players.
good luck dick; you have a lot of crap to eat in the next two months or so; i don't wish it upon anyone.
If they could just hang on to their tallent....
Im mocking them because Earl Rose, Wandile Mjekevu, Walter Venter, JP Joubert, Willem Stoltz and Hannes Franklin all ARE NOT Super 14 players and barely are average at Currie Cup level
OMG Earl Rose and Wandile Mjekevu are the biggest jokes
In my opinion Dick Muir cannot take all the blame. The resources he was given was ZERO. He was handed a sinking ship and asked to try and keep it afloat when players like Louis Ludik, Willem Alberts, Gerhard Mostert, Janus Labuschagne, Jacques Fourie, Bryan Habana and Jean Deysel all packed their bags and moved on to more prefessional franchises.
I can hear in your post how much this hurts mate
No need to act brave. Like I said before at least the Sharks could not sink to this low. Perhaps the Lions should have seen the writing on the wall 5 years ago when Ellis Park was PACKED TO THE ROOF with more Sharks supporters than Lion supporters
Look, this Lions team is building, still young guys and they picked the super 14 to do that, Its suicide but...they will get hammered and hammered and hammered but they will learn.
Perhaps you would also like to go and laugh at the homeless people in the streets...?
You are a real tough guy huh...busy ridiculing people, dragging their names through the mud all the while enjoying hiding behind the anonymity of your pseudonym at the other end of your computer...tough night at the office for the lions, I am not an out and out lions supporter but they are still a SAn team so your damn right, I support them when they play against Ozzys or Kiwis, hope they can pull it together and put in a better performance next week
in the Vodacom Cup.This is embarrasing for SA Rugby and the fact is that they have had season on season to "rebuild" "build confidance"etc and they are still where they were two or three or five(dont let me go on) seasons ago if not worse. And next week is going to be a slaughter. If I was a Lion fan I would really boycott this "team".To all the other Unions, get Baywatch,Clever and Jano because it's talent being wasted.Earl Rose I dont know how you can look your team mates in the eyes tonight.Carlos mate,.....RETIRE.Go get a tattoo!!
Thing is GILBERT I have never seen the Sharks lose in such a pathetic and spineless way. Watch them go and lose by 100 points today
Then I will climb into them as well trust me. My ridicule is not only for the "we have been building for 10 years" Lions
OMG RUGBYMAN is defending Earl Rose!!!! Nuff said if you guys settle for "drug dealing" and spineless players then you all need to expect losing 73 - 12
JAUK what pray tell is this team learning? How to get hammered and say things are getting better
MAMPARA you sure sound like a real tough guy by pointing out that I am in fact a real tough guy
JAKID Im too old to stay up that late
I believe the only reason they pulled of those two wins was 1. They had to because they were newly crowned world champs. (Dunedin)
2. The players had lots and lots more experience and "winning habits" than the current crop of Lions.
3. They were purely embarrassed enough and decided to thrash AUS at altitude (too much pride)
Both the Lions of now and the Bokke of 2008 were/are inconcistent, both set out with an attacking platform and started showing structure only the following year.
Give it time, the Lions will improve
You must be a big fan to know that kinda info
FAIL......thats all I can say
