'Tahs annihilate sorry Lions

Friday, March 12 The Waratahs ran in 11 tries to thrash the Lions 73-12 at the Sydney Football Stadium on Friday.

The hosts fired on all cylinders as they outclassed a sorry-looking Lions side who have now lost five in a row. Drew Mitchell scored four tries, Lachie Turner and Josh Holmes both got braces while Wycliff Palu, Dean Mumm and Tom Carter also got in on the act.

Mitchell opened the scoring when he managed to dot down after catching the Lions off guard with a quick tap in the 6th minute. However, the winger undid his good work moments later when he failed to field a kick. Mitchell fumbled the ball into the in goal area and failed to touch down for a 5m scrum which saw Tonderai Chavhanga pounce on the loose ball to score a gift of a try.

That would be the Lions’ only score in the first half as the ‘Tahs took control of the game and secured the four-try bonus point before the interval. The ‘Tahs immediately hit back when Lions flyhalf Carlos Spencer’s grubber kick went straight into the hands of Waratahs lock Dean Mumm who shook off one defender and ran in for the try.

Carter and Turner crossed the whitewash before Mitchell scored a scorcher of a set piece try in which he beat three defenders following a fluent lineout.

Half time: Waratahs 33-5 Lions

‘Tahs No 8 Wycliff Palu gathered a crosskick from Berrick Barnes to score the first points of the second half before Mitchell ran in back-to-back tries. Replacement prop JC Janse van Rensburg powered over from close to the line in the 67th minute for a consolation try for the Lions followed by a quick double for ‘Tahs replacement scrumhalf Holmes and an end to end try for Turner.

SARugby.com Man of the Match: Drew Mitchell. For the Waratahs, Mumm was very impressive in the No 4 jersey and Barnes had his best game yet for his new franchise. Doppies la Grange was outstanding for the Lions while Todd Clever continued his good form. However, the day belonged to Mitchell who looked for work throughout and bagged four tries.

Man, I was hoping that they could get one over with this one. When will we get four of our teams into the top eight? Just four, is that asking too much? One at the top and the rest, bar WP, at the bottom is just too much. Sad

By forgottenplayer - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
you can also deliver the log point on a silver plate. Bring back the cats next year.

By mampara - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I did'nt expect the buggers to win...but had hoped thay could stop NSW getting the bonus point aka 4 tries...11 tries okes???
But Karma, is that really necessary...I guess your just showing your quality...Again

By KaRmA77 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
No Im lauging my butt off at how useless the Lions really are Laughing

Need to mention the Earl Rose attempted tackle on Wycliff Palu Embarassed

In regards to bringing back the "Cats" franchise. Why would the Cheetahs weaken their team they are building by adding this pathetic bunch?

Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

OMG I actually thought for a little the Sharks might be the worst team in South Africa this year but obviously I have absolutely NOTHING to worry about Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

By KaRmA77 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Lets vote on if the Southern Spears / Kings should be brought into the Super 15 next year and this PATHETIC bunch of losers known as the Lions should be dropped?

ROFLMAO!

By crazysharksman - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Thats scoreline doesn't get prettier does it.. Shocked

Can't believe it!

By mmfa - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Karma, you really are the worst kind of supporter - sport is not always about winning. Are such a sore loser that you gotta keep up with this. I know its (edited) to be always on the losing side - I support the Sharks, and look how close we get then choke. You going insane over a game china. Put a cork in it.

By Hammer - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Man.......i should have picked Barnes in my fancy league team.......

Karma - after you calmed down and spilt your juices all over your keyboard ..remember this -> Its still a SA team that got molested.

gilbert??

Dick Muir needs a serious talking to! What happened to all the input from Jake White's Winning Ways company? Seems like all the advice has fallen on deaf ears AND was never utilised. The Lions did better last season than this year.

How can anyone take anything positive from this game? (Dick Muir take note!) The Lions are becoming worse than better every game.

What an insult to SA Rugby! How can players of that 'calibre' sink so low?

It beggars belief! Maties and Ikeys could do better or a team from the Vodacom Cup! In fact Grey College would do better!

That's a compliment to them and an insult to GLRU!

I'm stoked I'm not a Lions fan...what can you support? Mad

By kiwijimmy89 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
how embarsing for lions supporters..................if they have any Rolling Eyes

By KaRmA77 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Well the Spears / The Kings have my vote!

SA teams for next years Super 15 Bulls, Stormers, Cheetahs, Sharks and the Southern Spears / Kings.

By Stormer14 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
WOW, what happened!? I only caught the last 8 minutes or so but from what I saw (Turners step in touch aside) the Tah's didn't even have to try hard at all.

Karma, you're really childish and what you said was uncalled for but I'd be lying if I said I didn't know where you were coming from. Sounds like sour grapes and looking for someone to pick on (due to the Sharks' current position) coming from you. The Bulls still hold the record for least wins in a season (0) but the Lions look strong contenders to equal that this year!

In the end, we're all neighbours and should be behind each other as South Africans but it's sad that (at times) Provincialism seams to go above National Pride. I guess I'll just make the most of silence of some loudmouth Lions supporters for now though.

By Swami - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Jeepers Karma, enough with the schadenfreude...

By pietplof - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
What a load of Bollocks!!
Bring back Louis Luyt.

By zulustormer - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
any intelligent coach would know that when u r building up a team from scratch its better to play towards a structure. To get the basics right first should be most important. U should earn the right to go wide. Its funny how dickhead muir dont understand this basic principal of rugby.

By RugbyGal - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
zulustormer - gilbert will come back and tell us how pathetic the Stormers and Sharks are!

By Stormer14 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
That's where I understand where you're coming from. Those same supporters, when Stormers placed 10th... even though they were lower did exactly the same thing last year.

By Gilbert - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Wow! Im quite popular on this site. My name has been mentioned about 8 times in 4 hours already. Must be because im basically the only Lions supporter that comments on this site.

Look, im embarassed by the Lion's performance today (VERY embarassed), and also for their performance in the Super 14 for the last few years. I think today the Lions played pathetically but to be honest as a Lions supporter you get used to being thrashed, and of course mocked and laughed at afterwards...which is something you Stormer's and Shark's supporters haven't really experienced...especially year in and year out. Yes the Sharks have had it bad so far this year considering what they are capable of but thats what happens when a good team has a drop in form.

So firstly to crazysharkman, i respect you man for not lambasting the Lions especially because you know that i am a Lions supporter myself. Secondly RugbyGal i have never said that the Stormers are pathetic, iv said that they are over-rated...big difference. And yes during the week i made a joke about the Sharks being a "dead animal" and not a dangerous "wounded animal".

Karma, i think its pretty weak mocking a team that hasn't won a game yet considering the Sharks haven't won 1 either...you're creating bad Karma for your team. Wait till you guys start winning again before you do the insulting. Im sure a few Sharks supporters will agree with me.

By KaRmA77 - Castle Braai recommendations: 1
Who here thinks Earl Rose should be FIERED as a player?

By RugbyGal - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Peace Gilbert! I feel sorry for the Lions. I don't like a team from SA losing like that! Lets hope the Stormers can do it 2morrow. Still nervous bout the game!

And the Sharks and the Lions!

By Gilbert - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I think Dick Muir should get fired...Loffie was actually doing a better job. Hmmm, does that mean that if Loffie was the Bok's backline coach the Springboks would be a better attacking team?... Shocked

By mcpoo - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Seriously? Never mind being fired, Earl Rose will be forced to retire hurt. Very hurt indeed after all these nasty comments. But he and Morgan Newman should go and play in Japan. Its not televised in SA. Poor Lions though guys.. So galant. As was mentioned, the Bulls were ridiculed and rubbished for years, so cut them some slack.. Poor fellows.. so rubbish

By Gilbert - Castle Braai recommendations: 1
Yup i also feel very sorry for the Lions and their 6 other supporters in Johannesburg. But yeah believe it or not i will be shouting for the Sharks tomorrow morning and the Stormers in the evening as i usually do...i think SA can end up having 3 victories this weekend...especially if the Sharks aren't cheated out of a win again...

By Stormer14 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Big ups Gilbert... Must have taken a lot to even read this article!

Bulls lost ALL their games in 2002 and won 5 years later, so all teams have to start somewhere. (and we all know Lions had to start from scratch this year) Regardless of weather that ever happens (or if the Lions aren't in the Super 15 next year) there are still 8 rounds to go and some provincialism to overcome for ALL South African Supporters... Let's leave that for the Currie Cup and out of EVERYTHING else.

And I agree with Swami... Let's leave the schadenfreude for other Nations if at all.

By Stormer14 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0

Lions just suck what an embarresment of a team they are. For years and years they have pretended to be a good team but never really succeeded.

Just give the Franchise to EP, at least they really want it.

You would think that they would at least try to play decent rugby.

Spencer is a has been joke thats just playing in the Super 14 to pick his pension.

Dick Muir just showed what a useless coach he is that he has to bring in a 19 year old to do a mans job.

I don't even know why we have him in the springbok setup

By Gilbert - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
You're right cramer...Muir should have at least shown his class by making some improvements in the areas that the Lions have lacked severely over the years...such as defense. I don't see how he could have an excuse as to why the Lions defense has gotten worse. And in my opinion, they played better attacking Rugby last year with Loffie. Carlos was a waste of money...and Burton Francis is just making things worse when he comes on.

If i was part of the Springbok management i would be worried because perhaps Muir is showing his true potential or lack there of.

By arroyo - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
i really feel bad for the lions; damn shame.

i do feel it has something to do with their philosophy about rugby. when stormers offered him a contract the lions go suing fourie. i mean; he was faithful to them for years. now i know this is the professional era, but you have to draw the line. someone at the top has lost tough with the game and its rubbing of on the players.

good luck dick; you have a lot of crap to eat in the next two months or so; i don't wish it upon anyone.

By arroyo - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
him = fourie

By BullsRob - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I hurt for the lions. Such a brave perfomance against the Chiefs and failed so badly against the Tahs.

If they could just hang on to their tallent....

By KaRmA77 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Gilbert Im not mocking your preciously patheitc Lions team because they havent won a game yet this year and are STILL ranked below the Sharks. Im mocking them because they just got shafted by 73 points to 12 by a mediocre Waratahs team which the Sharks should have beaten.

Im mocking them because Earl Rose, Wandile Mjekevu, Walter Venter, JP Joubert, Willem Stoltz and Hannes Franklin all ARE NOT Super 14 players and barely are average at Currie Cup level Embarassed

OMG Earl Rose and Wandile Mjekevu are the biggest jokes Laughing

In my opinion Dick Muir cannot take all the blame. The resources he was given was ZERO. He was handed a sinking ship and asked to try and keep it afloat when players like Louis Ludik, Willem Alberts, Gerhard Mostert, Janus Labuschagne, Jacques Fourie, Bryan Habana and Jean Deysel all packed their bags and moved on to more prefessional franchises.

I can hear in your post how much this hurts mate Wink

No need to act brave. Like I said before at least the Sharks could not sink to this low. Perhaps the Lions should have seen the writing on the wall 5 years ago when Ellis Park was PACKED TO THE ROOF with more Sharks supporters than Lion supporters Razz

By rugby-man - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Yes Earl rose had a crap game but for the previous four games he's been one of their best players

By jauk - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
In an interview before the game Doppies Le Grange said that the Lions worked on their defence and that they are hoping for a better effort and result....
Look, this Lions team is building, still young guys and they picked the super 14 to do that, Its suicide but...they will get hammered and hammered and hammered but they will learn.

By Gilbert - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Karma, unfortunately (for you) I don't think ill waste anymore of my time replying to your overly facetious comments about the Lions. 1 or 2 comments are fine...but the amount of time you spend criticising the Lions compared to supporting the Sharks is just weird. Clearly you have a hidden agenda which obviously doesn't involve supporting the Sharks.

Perhaps you would also like to go and laugh at the homeless people in the streets...?

By mampara - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
how is this unit Karma...man, people reading you garbage are actually starting to cringe for you...
You are a real tough guy huh...busy ridiculing people, dragging their names through the mud all the while enjoying hiding behind the anonymity of your pseudonym at the other end of your computer...tough night at the office for the lions, I am not an out and out lions supporter but they are still a SAn team so your damn right, I support them when they play against Ozzys or Kiwis, hope they can pull it together and put in a better performance next week

By jakid - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I dont think the Lions or the Kings are good enough to compete.Maybe we should get rid of the Lions and let them play
in the Vodacom Cup.This is embarrasing for SA Rugby and the fact is that they have had season on season to "rebuild" "build confidance"etc and they are still where they were two or three or five(dont let me go on) seasons ago if not worse. And next week is going to be a slaughter. If I was a Lion fan I would really boycott this "team".To all the other Unions, get Baywatch,Clever and Jano because it's talent being wasted.Earl Rose I dont know how you can look your team mates in the eyes tonight.Carlos mate,.....RETIRE.Go get a tattoo!!

By jakid - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Jeez Karma, you're life must be sad. This site must be the best thing that ever happened to you.O sorry no, it must be the etv late night movies.

By KaRmA77 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Of course I was supporting the Lions (some might say I was not). I watched the whole game and Im still ROFLMAO Laughing

Thing is GILBERT I have never seen the Sharks lose in such a pathetic and spineless way. Watch them go and lose by 100 points today Razz

Then I will climb into them as well trust me. My ridicule is not only for the "we have been building for 10 years" Lions Laughing

OMG RUGBYMAN is defending Earl Rose!!!! Nuff said if you guys settle for "drug dealing" and spineless players then you all need to expect losing 73 - 12 Wink

JAUK what pray tell is this team learning? How to get hammered and say things are getting better Rolling Eyes

MAMPARA you sure sound like a real tough guy by pointing out that I am in fact a real tough guy Cool

JAKID Im too old to stay up that late Crying or Very sad

By mampara - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
karma...are you sure you are not Britney Spear's long lost mentally impaired little sister...'cause your dazzling intelect is beyond belief

By zulustormer - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
dickhead muir is to blame. Nobody else. If u cant even coach the basics of rugby then u shouldnt be there. Tackling, handling, forward play, set pieces, and kicking for territory. If the lions can perfect the basics they wil be hard to beat. Throwing the ball around or speeding up the game is no good if you inside ur own 22. Its no good if u cant tackle. This is basic stuff. A bok backline coach surely has to know this, right?

By Skaapie - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
I believe there is a similar pattern here to the 2008 Bokke. Granted, the Boks won a game in Dunedin and thrashed Australia 53-8 in their last game that year, BUT they were inconcistent, lost 19-0 to NZ in Cape Town and didn't do much better in the other game against Australia.

I believe the only reason they pulled of those two wins was 1. They had to because they were newly crowned world champs. (Dunedin)
2. The players had lots and lots more experience and "winning habits" than the current crop of Lions.
3. They were purely embarrassed enough and decided to thrash AUS at altitude (too much pride)

Both the Lions of now and the Bokke of 2008 were/are inconcistent, both set out with an attacking platform and started showing structure only the following year.

Give it time, the Lions will improve Wink

By KaRmA77 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
MAMPARA no Im not. Sounds like you are a Britney Spear's fan or something. I sure didnt know she had a mentally impaired little sister Laughing

You must be a big fan to know that kinda info Embarassed

FAIL......thats all I can say Cool

By KaRmA77 - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
ZULUSTORMER these players are being paid tens of thousands of Rands each month. You would think they DID NOT need to be taught still how to catch, tackle, forward play, set pieces, and kicking for territory. Thats what schoolboy Rugby is for mate Embarassed

By jauk - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
ai ai ai Karma77, relax man. I think you just shat your pants!

By jakid - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
Only in a Lions piece will Britney Spear's mentally impaired little sister pop up Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

By mampara - Castle Braai recommendations: 0
