Seven rookies in Cheetahs squad

Tuesday, February 09 Naka Drotske has named his Cheetahs side to face the Bulls in Bloemfontein on Friday.

Drotske has included seven players without Super 14 experience in the 22-man squad.  Riaan Viljoen, Lionel Mapoe and Ashley Johnson are included in the starting line-up with Ryno Barnes, Coenie Oosthuizen, Walti Vermuelen and Sias Ebersohn included on the bench.

Despite the new faces the Cheetahs team has a predictable and settled look about it.  Springbok fullback Viljoen and impressive pivot Naas Olivier slot in from the Griquas while the bulk of the remaining players helped the Cheetahs to the Currie Cup final last year.

I really like the look of this team. The bulls will have a hard time containing their back three. Some real pace. The frontrow doesnt look bad either. Throw in what I rate as the best loose trio in the compitition and the boys in blue are in for a rough ride.

Well. I really won't complain about any of the 7 rookies. They all deserve to be there.

A team that can cause a few up-set's. Just hope the Bulls are not the first!

I really hope the cause up-sets against Aussie and NZ teams.

Yep they must beat the Brumbies, Crusaders, Chiefs and Blues. Those will be the big non-SA fish this year.

Thanks actionman - was starting we didn't have enemies no more. Wink

What a (edited) start it will be though for all 13 other teams if we actually do beat the Cheetahs.

This is a fantastic young team. Great front row, great loosies and great back 3. Really disappointed sarel pretorius isn't starting, hope he gets good game time off the bench. If this team can gel and get some confidence, they could certainly challenge for a place at the top. Come on guys, show the bulls how to play!

A great team. Riaan Viljoen, Lionel Mapoe and Ashley Johnson are surely no rookies.

The Bulls will win with 15.

would've gone with danniler and then sub him with viljoen to provide that impact and possibly a long range drop goal or 2.

the breakdown will be the area where this game will be won or lost. i think the bulls might struggle in the scrums and the line-outs could go either way.

but i know for certain that morne will apply the kick and chase tactic and its gonna be up to the cheetahs back 3 to nip it in the but by returning their kicks with running rugby.

i just feel that with all the youngsters in the cheetah team you can expect them letting in some soft tries. lets hope they defend like demons and show some "vasbyt". Confused
