SA v Fiji quarterfinal...again
Friday, February 05
South Africa are through to the quarterfinals of the Wellington Sevens, despite a 19-7 loss against host and IRB Sevens World Series log leaders New Zealand on Friday.
The Springbok Sevens now have a date with Fiji on Saturday, their third consecutive meeting at the quarterfinal stage of a Series tournament this season.
Fiji, unbeaten on day one, got the better of South Africa in Dubai and George last December and must be regarded as favourites against a South African team missing several of its regular stalwarts.
In the final match of the day, the Springboks and All Blacks delivered yet another epic battle. The first half ended 7-7 after a try from New Zealand speedster Sherwin Stowers and a quick reply from Ryno Benjamin.
South Africa dominated territory after halftime, but New Zealand’s defence held firm and they forced two crucial turnovers, resulting in two vital tries which took the game away from a spirited SA team with Zar Lawrence and Kurt Baker the try scorers.
In the Pool's opener South Africa beat the Niue Islands 38-10, new cap Steven Hunt scoring twice. The Springbok Sevens then registered their second win of the day, against Sevens World Cup holders Wales, Cecil Afrika the star in a comfortable win with three tries in a 38-5 win.
The Cup quarterfinal draw for Saturday is:
New Zealand vs. Australia
Samoa vs. Kenya
England vs. Canada
Fiji vs. South Africa
