Loffie replaces Chester as Boland boss

Wednesday, November 11 Newly appointed director of rugby Eugene 'Loffie' Eloff said it will be a huge challange to get the Boland Cavaliers back into the Currie Cup competition.

Eloff, a former Golden Lions coach, sacked just before the Lions' match against the touring British & Irish Lions earlier this year, takes over from Chester Williams, who could not save the team from relegation.

Eloff was one of three candidates on Boland's short list along with Nico Serfontein of the Blue Bulls and a former Boland director of rugby, Rudy Joubert.

"We all know that when it comes to raw talent, the sky is the limit for Boland," said Eloff. "All we need to do is to identify the talent and develop it to the best of our abillity."

Eloff said his main aim is to play an important role in SA rugby. "It is pure pleasure if some of your players, like Bryan Habana and Jaque Fourie, become Springboks.

"I'm sure we can do the same for Boland. Obviously I'm sad to hear about the players who have left the union, but I'm confident of making Boland stand up again," he said.

LOL, it seems as though the Boland Rugby Union is poorer than I thought. Obviously the clubs DSTV has been canceled for the last couple of seasons, because Loffie kinda sucked when he was with the Lions.

Way to go Boland, hire a sub-standard coach to help your sub-standard union out of the depths of SA Rugby...it seems their not only short on money and sponsorship, BUT on intelligence as well. Shocked

Boland got a sponsorship of R12 million (I stand corrected) so it strikes me as odd to be calling them poor - the team hasn't been very good but it would be good for SA if Loffie can produce some quality players out of the Union because at grassroots - there are some naturally gifted players

If new coaches would just take the time to look at history , maybe Boland would not have been relegated, however, with as much in-fighting as there was/is, it is to be expected. One only has to look at Boland vs Cheetahs end Sept '08 and decide for oneself. Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

So Chester only lasted there about 6 minutes???

Chester will probably play the race card as he allways does. He said he should have been springbok coach with out any experience....

I reckon Loffe will pack up the drawing board he wrote on so much at the lions with to the Boland, maybe all those weekends of "building for the future" will work there...
