Injury ends Goosen's season
Oct 08,2012
Springbok fly-half Johan Goosen's season is over after he tore knee ligaments in Saturday's Rugby Championship loss to the All Blacks.
Goosen will see two more specialists on Tuesday, after the first two doctors who examined him differed on whether or not he needed to have an operation immediately.
If the operation goes ahead, he will be out of action for close to six months, but if there is no surgery, he will be sidelined for six weeks and is therefore unlikely to play any part in the Springboks' end-of-year tour.
Free State Cheetahs team doctor Ian Morris said Goosen would be "very lucky" to play again this year.
"He's done his medial collateral ligaments and we picked that up on the MRI scan, but the lucky thing is that none of the other ligaments have been damaged," he told Supersport.
"We've decided to get a few more specialists to give an opinion before we decide if we need to operate or not.
"Regardless of whatever course of action is decided, I feel he would be very lucky to make the end-of-year tour. I could be wrong but with these types of injuries, it is never a good idea to rush a player."
Morris said Goosen told him he sustained the injury during an unfortunate clash of bodies during the game.
"He said it was when a player's body fell onto the front part of the knee during the close clashes in the game," he revealed.
Morris said if it was decided to operate, then Goosen would go under the knife "within a day or two" in Bloemfontein so that the recovery process can begin almost immediately.

What a blow for him. Two major injuries this year - doesn't bode well for the future. Maybe being pushed too far too fast?
Will be interesting to see who will be used for EOY tour. Jantjies did not make a strong case Saturday.

At this stage I think HM is considering calling up Stransky from the commentary box......
Sorry to see any guy substaining such injuries.
But he will be back.

Please Heynecke, Please give Lambie his chance. Let him play and settle in. He is our best fly half even when Goosen is fit so let him play. He takes the ball to the line and doesnt shy away from the physical stuff, often handing off much bigger players. He is a good defender and proved that in his burst at 12 for the Sharks. Lets use him and stick with him!

Lambie was my first choice from the start. Now the problem for were he goes will be solved. Steyn at fullback when he return but only if zane looses form, these players have to fight for a jersey now. Taute and Dejong are better at centre and we still have hogaart to shuffle when JP returns. Bismaak to Captain. JDV vice captain. We need a backline injection coach urgently.

Agreed, Lambie would be my first choice as well, even with a fit again Goosen, jantjies and Steyn in the mix.
Hope he proves himself to Meyer over the closing games of the Currie Cup for the Sharks at flyhalf.

Why did HM take so long to sub him on sat. It was clear we were down to 14 men and keeping him on could have made the injury much worse.
I believe we should stick with Meyer but he has made a LOT of dumb selections and decisions in all of his first tests. Needs to pull his finger out ASAP.

Tough break for goose. I don't really rate him as a great first five but its still sad to see a young fella cop an injury like that.
